saw a blaze post advertising something i was genuinely interested in and it just. disappeared.
Genuinely feel like Iâm going insane any time I try to explain to someone that Top Gun Maverick exists to convince you that the US violating international laws of war to strike neutral countries (as it does near constantly) is good
I just kinda feel like the joker when I try to get the point across that this movie exists solely to convince you that unchecked US warmongering is a good and heroic thing
itâs wild to me that people act like this kind of thing is some unhinged conspiracy theory when itâs something that the US military literally admits? itâs just a fact. but we canât even get to the part of the conversation where we debate whether or not this is harmful because people refuse to even acknowledge that the military uses media like this to influence public opinion.
[id: screenshot from a wikipedia article reads: Role of the U.S. military. The film was actively supported and influenced by the United States Department of Defense and the United States Navy to present the U.S. military in a positive light. The Navyâs cooperation in the film was explained to be motivated by the goals of recruitment, retention, and showcasing military excellence. The U.S. Air Force also ran recruitment ads before the filmâs screenings. Further, the plot involves attacking an unidentified foreign country without declaring war or questioning the necessity. This led some critics, scholars and journalists to criticize the film as propaganda in varying measures. Some comments declared the film to be worse in this regard than its predecessor, which had increased recruitment for Naval Aviators by 500 percent. Several sources published quid pro quo agreements outlining how the U.S. Department of Defense could influence Paramount in crafting the film, which was also described as âmutual exploitationâ. end id]
marvel movies should also a part of this conversation. with their message that âthe only way for our planet to be safe is for people with untouchable power to be given unilateral permission to enact whatever violence they deem necessary.â the superhero that is supposed to represent the very ideals of our country canonically believes he shouldnât be subjected to oversight by an international ethics committee.
you could argue that there is at least more nuance in marvel movies because some of the major characters object to this abusive use of power. but when an argument is only presented so it can be proven wrong when yet another catastrophe befalls earth and we are shown that, in the end, itâs better for the âheroesâ not to be subject to checks and balances, the outcome in the narrative supporting totalitarian power ends up being arguable worse.
if you want your magical fantasy guy to exist outside of real-world politics so they can obliterate whoever is in front of them without having the morality of their actions questioned, you very much have to keep them outside of any real world politics whatsoever. you canât just introduce the concept that they are a metaphor for a real world countryâs military and then act like that doesnât affect the narrative.
once you take captain america out of the context of punching nazis specifically, which is arguably a rare example of easy black-and-white morality (it is always morally correct to punch nazis), it all goes downhill from there.
